We are located in the United States of America in the very small State of Texas. PurkeyFamily is worldwide, we have friends and guest from around the world who help us collaborate new ideas for our site. Our main goal for this website is to have fun and provide helpful information for people around the world.
Being located in the Katy Texas / West Houston area, many of our post are focused on the local community here in the Southeast Texas area. After spending about 12 years in the Houston area our family has gained alot of incite about the Houston area. We know where all the good places to eat are located as well as the places to avoid. We can tell you where many of the top attractions are located and which ones you should be sure not to miss if you are ever in the Katy Texas area.
Before moving to the Houston Texas we spent are childhood years in the East Texas area. We grew up in a small town known as Hoard, Texas. Most people have never heard of this little town which is a few miles outside of Mineola, Texas. I'm sure the population there wasn't much more than 50 people (maybe less) back in the day. Keep in mind that Mineola wasn't much bigger. I think the population in Mineola was somewhere around 2,500 people during our childhood. It was big enough, however, to have a school where we could get some good ole education. My wife and I both graduated from Mineola High School in the 1990s. During High School we both shared an interest in agriculture and sports. She was on the Volleyball Team and I was on the Football Team. We both were involved in the Future Famers of America (AKA FFA) and we participated in various activities including Greenhand Chapter Conducting and Meat Judging. Strangely enough, we never dated in High School (at least that we will admit to), but ended up getting married after our college years. Amazingly enough, we can both still quote the FFA Creed. Here it is for old times' sake:

I believe in the future of farming, with a faith born not of words but of deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.
I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.
I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.
I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so-for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.

During our college years, my wife attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville Texas and I attended The University of Texas at Tyler in Tyler Texas. Throughout our college years we maintained close ties to all our friends and family back home and enjoyed visiting with our friends and family whenever possible. Many years later we still have many friends in the East Texas area and enjoy visiting them every once in a while. We plan to set up some web pages to describe some of their "down-home" antics, sometimes a laugh can be good for the soul.
We decided to get married close to where we had made our new home, so we chose Galveston Texas as the place to celebrate our lives. If you get really bored and have nothing better to do, below is a link to our wedding site:
After spending half our life in a sheltered little town (Hoard) with mostly cows and goats, moving to Houston was a bit of a challenge. So why did we move to Houston Texas? We moved to Houston for work, which is the reason most people move here. Jobs are more plentiful in this area, which is nice when you are raising a family. Engineering jobs (specifically oil & gas) are typically easier to find than they are in other parts of the country (or the world for that matter). Even in 2009 when most of the country was reeling from the recession, Houston was still rolling. I won't say Houston was unaffected in 2009, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the other towns I visited during this time. Because of the strong economy in Houston, it has become a melting pot for so many different people from all parts of the world. This has enable us to make friends from places that I never knew existed during my childhood (in Hoard Texas). The experience has been awesome, I have learned so much.
